N.C. Transportation Museum

The N.C. Transportation Museum is a historic site, once home to Southern Railway’s largest steam locomotive repair facility in the southeast, and a museum featuring all types of transportation history – railroading, automotive, aviation, and more. 20-minute train rides are available on Saturdays and Sundays around the 60-acre museum site. The N.C. Transportation Museum is located in Spencer, NC about five minutes off I-85, about an hour’s drive from Charlotte, Greensboro or Winston-Salem.

The Mint Museum

Stevens Creek Nature Preserve and Center

Stevens Creek Nature Preserve covers 281 acres and protects the restored Stevens Creek, which is the historic range of the federally endangered Carolina Heelsplitter mussel. Over 3 miles of looped trails meander through the forest. Stop and observe nature in action down by the creek, watch birds in the native plant garden or enjoy a picnic at the firepit. The Nature Center is free to visit and features live, native animals, an exhibit hall, rentable classroom for birthdays and events, and a gift shop. Education staff offer public and private programs for individuals and groups year-round. The Nature Center is open Monday-Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm and Sunday 1:00pm to 5:00pm and the Preserve is open from 6:30am to sunset.
