Typically, we showcase the Top 20 winners... but this year, in honor of KidsOutAndAbout.com's 21st birthday (we originally launched in June of 2001), we bring you the Charlotte area's
TOP 21 Places to Take Kids!

1. Gem Theatre
The Gem Theatre originally opened on December 31, 1936. A few years later, in 1942, The Gem Theatre was gutted by fire and the theatre was reduced to ashes. The theatre was rebuilt in 1948 and featured a beautiful lobby and 916 seats, including the balcony section. The Gem has been open ever since and is one of the oldest single-screen movie theatre in continuous operation today. The Gem is also one of only a few movie theatres that offers balcony seating.
2. North Carolina Transportation Museum
The N.C. Transportation Museum, is a historic site once home to Southern Railway’s largest steam locomotive repair facility and a museum featuring all types of transportation history – railroading, automotive, trucking, aviation, and more. Meander through The Bob Julian Roundhouse, the largest remaining roundhouse in North America. It is home to locomotives, passenger rail cars, and a full-size replica Wright Flyer. The massive Back Shop, where steam locomotives were once completely overhauled, now houses vintage rail cars, antique automobiles, fire trucks, and the restoration of the Piedmont Airlines’ Potomac Pacemaker DC-3. The Flue Shop houses the museum’s automotive exhibit. Train rides, lasting 20-25 minutes, are available on the 60-acre property pulled by a vintage diesel locomotive on certain days and times. 3. NarroWay Productions

4. Carowinds
Carowinds, a 400-acre amusement park located on the North Carolina-South Carolina state line, is home to top-rated roller coasters, including Fury 325, the world's tallest and fastest giga coaster, as well as more than 60 rides, attractions, and live stage shows. Carolina Harbor, a 26-acre water park, features a variety of water slides, wave pools, large play structures and a three-acre children’s play area. 6. The Schiele Museum of Natural History
The Schiele Museum is a natural adventure waiting for you! Our mission is to inspire curiosity and understanding of science and the natural world through exceptional educational programs and exhibits. Permanent galleries feature Native Americans, North American wildlife and habitats including live animal displays, and an exhibit hall dedicated to the biodiversity of North Carolina. 12. Tiger World Endangered Wildlife Preserve
Tiger World Endangered Wildlife Preserve is a nonprofit 501c3 animal conservation and educational center dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and preservation of exotic animals. We are open to the public for educational guided tours and walkabout self-guided tours in Rockwell, NC. Our goal is to provide the best environment in captivity for the animals while also providing a stimulating learning environment for visitors. 13. Anne Springs Close Greenway
The Anne Springs Close Greenway is a 2,100 acre nature preserve located in the heart of Fort Mill, SC. Hodges Family Farm is a working farm owned/operated by the Hodges family for over 100 years and has been honored as a “Century Farm” by the state of North Carolina.
The farm has a robust online shop that offers fruit, herbs, and veggies as well as honey, eggs, local dairy products, and pasture-raised meats for purchase. Additionally, events such as its annual Pumpkin Patch, farm tours, and obstacle races, allow people to experience first-hand its rich history and charm.
