1. Gem Theatre
The Gem Theatre originally opened on December 31, 1936. A few years later, in 1942, The Gem Theatre was gutted by fire and the theatre was reduced to ashes. The theatre was rebuilt in 1948 and featured a beautiful lobby and 916 seats, including the balcony section. The Gem has been open ever since and is one of the oldest single-screen movie theatre in continuous operation today. The Gem is also one of only a few movie theatres that offers balcony seating.
2. Discovery Place
Discovery Place is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides STEM education and learning opportunities to the Carolinas through four distinct museum experiences at Discovery Place Science in uptown Charlotte, Discovery Place Nature adjacent to Freedom Park in Charlotte and Discovery Place Kids locations in both Huntersville and Rockingham, interactive educational programming, professional development training and community outreach initiatives. Discovery Place is supported, in part, with funding from the Arts & Science Council.
3. North Carolina Transportation Museum
The N.C. Transportation Museum, is a historic site once home to Southern Railway’s largest steam locomotive repair facility and a museum featuring all types of transportation history – railroading, automotive, trucking, aviation, and more. Meander through The Bob Julian Roundhouse, the largest remaining roundhouse in North America. It is home to locomotives, passenger rail cars, and a full-size replica Wright Flyer. The massive Back Shop, where steam locomotives were once completely overhauled, now houses vintage rail cars, antique automobiles, fire trucks, and the restoration of the Piedmont Airlines’ Potomac Pacemaker DC-3. The Flue Shop houses the museum’s automotive exhibit. Weekend train rides, lasting 20-25 minutes, are available on the 60-acre property pulled by a vintage diesel locomotive. 4. Carowinds
Carowinds, a 400-acre amusement park located on the North Carolina-South Carolina state line, is home to top-rated roller coasters, including Fury 325, the world's tallest and fastest giga coaster, as well as more than 60 rides, attractions, and live stage shows. Carolina Harbor, a 26-acre water park, features a variety of water slides, wave pools, large play structures and a three-acre children’s play area. Tiger World Endangered Wildlife Preserve is a nonprofit 501c3 animal conservation and educational center dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and preservation of exotic animals. We are open to the public for educational guided tours and walkabout self-guided tours in Rockwell, NC. Our goal is to provide the best environment in captivity for the animals while also providing a stimulating learning environment for visitors. 16. Charlotte Museum
The Charlotte Museum of History is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization that interprets and preserves Charlotte’s unique history, enriching the community through shared understanding of the past and inspiring dialogue about the future.
The Museum is the steward of the ca. 1774 Hezekiah Alexander Home Site, a National Register of Historic Places site, and places an emphasis on the settlement of the Carolina Backcountry and the ideas and events that led to the American Revolution. The Alexander House is the last extant home of a framer of North Carolina’s 1776 Constitution and Bill of Rights and the oldest surviving house in Mecklenburg County. In addition to the house, the Alexander home site contains a reproduction log kitchen, reconstructed two-story springhouse and log barn.

Founded in 1953, the purpose of the Rowan Museum Inc. is to collect, preserve, research, exhibit, and educate the public about the history of Rowan County and Piedmont, North Carolina through the use of its properties, programs, and collections.
18. Hodges Family Farm
The Farm is located on 180 acres of land in Mecklenburg County. It is family owned and operated. The farm is listed on the National and State Historic Registries. It was previously used as a dairy farm, and has now been turned into an educational farm.
19. Hall Family Farm
Proud to be family owned and operated for over 70 years. We have fresh strawberries in the spring and gorgeous pumpkins in the fall. We also offer a fun family experience with hayrides, covered picnic tables, and activities for kids of all ages.
