From navigation and signaling to water purification and shelter skills, Survival Science shows campers how science and problem-solving are used in real-world survival situations. Campers work in teams as they learn how to stay prepared and think creatively when facing challenges. Over the course of the week, campers take on a variety of survival challenges. They design and test a solar cooker, learn to navigate using pacing and compasses, and solve distance and direction challenges during a scavenger hunt. Survivalists practice turning everyday materials into useful tools by making cordage, knots, and shelter components, and use signaling techniques to communicate across distances. Hands-on building and testing continue as campers create and launch catapults, refine their solar cookers, and purify water using simple methods. Along the way, they complete creative projects connected to their survival skills and challenges. Campers leave with new skills and a deeper understanding of how science helps people stay prepared and solve problems.
