By Way of the Back Door - Culture & Heritage Museums - Historic Brattonsville

During the month of February, in honor of Black History Month, Historic Brattonsville’s living history programs look more deeply into how enslaved people lived on the plantation. “By Way of the Back Door” offers special guided tours and activities that highlight African American foodways, agriculture, and way of life in the Carolina Piedmont through the 18th and 19th centuries.

From the fields to the kitchen, foods that originated in Africa are highlighted in cooking demonstrations and in agricultural practices. Singing, storytelling, and playing games offer insight into how African American culture is persevered.
