McCrorey Family YMCA

The McCrorey YMCA was established in 1936 as a Y for African Americans in a segregated South. Originally located on 2nd Street in Charlotte’s historic Brooklyn neighborhood, the McCrorey YMCA relocated to its current location on BeattiesFord Road in 1969. The branch was renamed in 1951 after YMCA supporter Dr. Henry L. McCrorey, President Emeritus of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, in response to the board’s desire to name it after a thoughtful community leader who led a life worthy of emulation.
